Specials are the collective grouping of exotics, uniques, and artifacts. They are harder to find than the more standard equipment/items in the game and, for that reason, tend to be more powerful or have unusual abilities.
Each type of special is differentiated thusly:
- Exotics are the more common of specials. They are fully moddable (with a few exceptions) and can appear multiple times over the course of a single game.
- Uniques are, just as the name says, unique in any particular run of DoomRL. Each individual unique can only be found once per game (though a unique must be picked up to be counted as found, otherwise the same unique can spawn multiple times in a single run if the player never picks it up), and can only be modded by Technicians (though the extent they can be modded depends on the unique, see the below list). If any floor has a unique spawn in it, you will get a level feeling that states "You feel there is something really valuable here!". Uniques are normally indestructible by normal means (such as being dropped in destructive fluids and caught in explosions, even being able to survive nuking the level), but in the case of unique armors, they will be lost if an enemy wearing them is gibbed.
- Artifacts are the rarest special. Whereas exotics and uniques can spawn randomly, artifacts can only appear specifically as rewards in certain special levels. They can be possibly obtained on every run as a result if the player is able to complete their inhabitant special levels, provided the game is being played above the I'm Too Young to Die difficulty (otherwise a couple special levels with artifacts will not be accessible) and not in the Angel of 100 nor Archangel of 666 challenges (where none of the special levels are accessible).
Here is a complete list of specials in the game (as of 0.9.9.8).
