Certain items and traits can cause the Doom Guy to go berserk for a short period of time.
Being berserk divides damage by 4 rounded down before armor reduction, and doubles melee damage before armor reduction. The time cost of all actions is reduced by 0.4s, except for actions that take less than 0.5s already. For such actions the average speed is reduced, but the exact behavior requires an in-depth knowledge of the time system, so it is described here. The player can't run while berserking.
The duration of the berserk is based on a counter that is separate from the game's normal time system. Each action you take (regardless of the number of game seconds that action lasts) decreases the counter by 1. When the counter is at 5 or less, the berserk notification on the HUD darkens as a warning that the effect is almost over. Picking up a Berserk Pack adds 40 to the counter, as does picking up a Chainsaw for the first time. If the Berserker trait activates, it adds 20 to the counter.
